I know what you're thinking. Wait, doesn't Mike do Facebook ads for businesses? Yes, I do. And I still do - because they work well... but not for everything. Turns out, it's tough to get someone, who has never heard of your business, to buy your product or service directly through a Facebook ad. I've tried it for a couple of my clients and the results have been miserable. So we're not doing that anymore. But before you declare Facebook ads dead… keep reading. Here's the better play: if you sell a product or service, don't try to sell it directly to a cold Facebook audience. Instead, use Facebook ads to get them into a sales funnel. The targeting features on Facebook’s ad platform are still second to none (as of 4/28/19). Use FB ads to grow your email list, hit them with an automated email sequence to warm them up, build and strengthen a relationship with them, then offer your product or service. And don’t hesitate to offer your product/service in your first email. Back to Facebook... Facebook ads work well when it comes to capturing leads, driving targeted traffic to your website, getting exposure to your target audience, and building an email list. I want to highlight the last one - building an email list. This is important: The money is in the list. You've heard that before, right? It's true. You have free access to people who said, “yea, I actually want to hear what you have to say and offer.” THAT IS HUGE. If you use the power of your email list, correctly - you will generate more sales, turn clients into loyalists and brand ambassadors, and build relationships that strengthen over time. People will make a connection with you and your business. All you need is 1,000 true fans. If you haven’t read that book, you should. It’ll only take about an hour. It’s only 46 pages and it costs $3. Here’s the link if you want to check it out: 1,000 True Fans About the whole email marketing thing.. You can’t just offer a coupon or discount. People are flooded with mundane and predictable offers in their inbox every day. There’s some kind of “sale” every day. That’s why most people just hit the DELETE button. So make sure to make your emails stick out. Craft a catchy subject line that creates curiosity - but make sure it’s not clickbait. Address whatever your subject line indicates, so people don’t feel like you ripped them off. You’ll notice my emails are plain and simple. That’s on purpose. I want my emails to feel personal. I’m writing to you. I’m not blasting an advertisement to thousands of people with fancy HTML graphics all over the place. This is not an advertisement. It’s a story-driven email with valuable information you can implement right now in your business... with a soft sell at the end. It works. Give it a shot. Sometimes I use bold lettering. That’s because some people don’t read every single word in every single email. They skim the text and move on. I want to make sure they see the important parts - hence the bold lettering. Tell a story. Human beings love stories. They have since the beginning of mankind. I’m telling a story right now, and you’re still reading, right? People connect with stories. Provide value and make people feel something. People buy products & services based on emotion. More importantly, people buy from people.. Not businesses or brands. I know you’ve heard that one before.. but it’s a good reminder for me every time I hear it. On a personal note; my business is shifting slightly. I used to be a Facebook ads guy - and I still am. But email marketing is a better way for me to help businesses grow.. and to help people.. and that’s what I like to do. I also like to write compelling copy. I could write all day long. There’s a craft, strategy, and structure to writing words that make people feel something and take action. I’ve invested a lot of time and money into online courses taught by big names in the email copywriting industry (yes, such an industry exists). So while FB ads used to be the focus of my business, they are now just a very important complement to it. Facebook ads can grow an email list as fast as the weeds in my front yard. But that’s only the first step of turning a cold audience into a hot & bothered new client who can’t get enough of you. The money is in the list. It may sound corny (I am).. but I’m no longer calling myself a Facebook ads guy. I’m a Sales Generating Storyteller. It’s ok.. you can laugh. :) So… With all this said, I hope you have some takeaways. **Use the power of your email list** If you understand the importance of email marketing, but simply don’t have time to do the research, interviews, and storytelling… I can help. I’m doing it for two awesome businesses right now.. and both business owners have told me their clients have mentioned how much they enjoy reading their emails. The clients mentioned the stories in the emails, to the business owner, which created a stronger relationship between business owner and client… perfect. My wife and I brought our baby boy, Brady, to a brewery on St. Patrick's Day (say that five times fast). Turns out, we weren't the only cool parents there. There were babies everywhere. As soon as we walked through the front doors, about a dozen beer drinkers put their pints down, stopped their conversations, and greeted Brady with smiles and, "Oh, my God. He's soooo cute!" Brady got the red carpet treatment as we made our way to the back corner of the brewery. Yes... we put baby in a corner. Before we sat down, we said hello to a couple who had the same idea we did. They brought their baby, too. A few minutes later, our niece and nephews walked in with my wife's sister and her husband. We hadn't seen them in more than a month - so we decided to meet them at a local watering hole before going back to our house. We tried a couple tasty beers at the family-friendly brewery. Then Brady stole the show. He was full of smiles as he locked in with laser focus on his chew toys (we think he might be teething). The people at the two tables next to us couldn't get enough of him. And naturally, as babies do, Brady made them smile and start conversations with us. We shared some short stories and made a connection. After about an hour, with two beers down the hatch, we decided to call it quits... before Brady started getting fussy. Our little lucky charm was well-behaved. So we got up, took a family photo, and walked out to the same happy stares and bright smiles that we were greeted with. Here's that family photo... When night arrived, and Brady was fast asleep, I realized he reminded me to make sure I do something important every single day. I have a high-stress career in TV news. I have a brand new baby boy who isn't a fan of sleeping through the night quite yet (but I still love em). And I'm working my tail off to grow my own business. It's easy for me to get caught up in the grind. And I know you might feel like that sometimes, too. So here's what Brady reminded me to do... Don't forget to smile. Don't forget to make people smile. Don't forget to make connections with people. And don't forget to strengthen them over time. Do it with your family. Do it with your friends. Do it with your clients. Don't worry about hitting the reset button. If you've been thinking about testing something new - do it. Stay fresh, like Brady's baby face. Life (and business) will be better. How My Awkward Ride to Work Can Help You2/26/2019 So I had an interesting ride to work the other day. I listen to marketing & business-related podcasts every single time I’m in the car (except when my wife’s with me. She doesn’t particularly like my podcasts. But if it’s just me and my baby boy in the car, we listen to them… because he can’t talk yet). I couldn’t name one Top 40 Song right now. I’d rather use my drive time to learn, than to listen to mediocre music. I might be a dork... But I’m ok with that. Anyway... I listen to The Marketing Book Podcast, Laptop Empires Podcast, The Greatness Unlimited Podcast, and a few others. I recommend all of them. I honestly think you’ll get some really good takeaways for your business. Each episode inspires me and gives me fresh ideas I can implement to help my clients - and myself (they’ll do the same for you). But the other day, something strange happened when I started listening… I WAS THE GUEST ON THE SHOW! I’m not gonna lie… It was a little awkward to hear my own voice coming through my car’s speakers. I’m not used to that… (but I could get used to it) But ya know what? I don’t think it was that bad. In fact, I think my slightly awkward ride to work could help you. I’d really appreciate it if you flipped on Bluetooth and listened to the 23 minute podcast. I got to share some valuable and actionable information and tips that you can use right now to help generate new leads and convert them to new paying clients. It was an honor to be a guest on, “The Greatness Unlimited Podcast”, with Coach Chris. Check it out here:
I hope there’s at least one takeaway for you.
Have an awesome day & thank you, Mike Sullivan P.S. Leave a comment below and let me know what you think. And if you really like it, feel free to share with anyone you feel can benefit from it.

OBJECTIONS… they suck. I’m sure you’ve heard at least one of these in your career... “I need to think about it." “Let me talk it over with my wife/husband.” “It’s too much money for me right now.” “I don’t think the timing’s right.” Sound familiar? I’ve been in business for a year now, and I’m still ‘weak sauce’ at handling objections. In general, I don’t like confrontation. I’m quick to say, “OK, thanks for your time and have a good day”. I work hard to get leads, only to watch them slip away in seconds. It sucks. I feel like I wasted my time and theirs. When someone says, “I’ll get back to you”, I know 99% of the time he or she won’t. When someone says, “I’ll talk to my wife/husband about it”... Yea, right. 99% of the time, they have no desire to ever hear from me again. But that’s cool… Because every failure is a learning experience… and I’m getting better at handling objections. In fact, I’ve learned objections aren’t a bad thing at all. I almost prefer to hear them. Instead of freezing once an objection is thrown my way, I’ve found a way to turn (most of) them into an opportunity where I can actually help the person I’m speaking with. I’ve learned a lot from my small group of mentors. One of them told me to read the book, “Objections”. Makes sense, right? It’s an easy read, packed with valuable information you can implement as soon as you hear your next objection… because it’s only a matter of time before you do. I’m glad my mentor recommended it - so I’m doing the same for you. The $16 investment has turned “hard NO’s” into thousands of dollars in revenue. It could do the same, or better, for you. You might be great at handling every objection in the book (sure, pun intended). But if you know there’s room for even the slightest bit of improvement… If you want to stop watching potential clients slip away and walk out the door or hang up the phone… And if you want to not freeze like a deer in the headlights once you hear an objection… Then buy the book… Read it… And turn objections into new clients that’ll pay you for help, recommend you to friends and family, and become your biggest fans. Go kick some butt, Michael P.S. What books do you recommend for me? I love learning new things all the time!
